Here's a down-to-earth take on the news: "U.S. DOE Puts Up $14.5 Million for Research in Marine and Offshore Wind Energy."


Hey folks, here's some news from the DOE's Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) and Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO). They just threw out a funding invite on January 16, calling on domestic higher education institutions, including ones that serve minority communities, to jump in and snag some support for digging into marine energy and offshore wind technologies.

The goal of these research activities is to spread the use of renewable energy far and wide. That's in line with the Biden administration's big dreams for a clean electricity scene by 2035 and a net-zero-emissions economy by 2050.

Now, let's talk numbers. The U.S. DOE thinks floating offshore wind could bring a whopping 2.8 TW of power to the table in the U.S. If we tap into all of that, it's more than double the electricity we're currently gobbling up.

So, what's in the funding pot? There are four main areas. First up, there's digging into cost reduction using available data and finding ways to push marine energy devices forward. They're throwing up to $5 million into this basket.

The second area is all about blending offshore wind and marine energy with aquaculture development. This one's a tag team effort between WPTO and WETO, and there's $1.5 million up for grabs.

Next, there's a slice of the pie for undergraduate senior design and research projects in marine energy – a cool $2 million for this one.

Last but not least, there's an open-topic area where folks can pitch ideas that deal with the unique needs of the marine energy world. Here, there's a hefty $6 million on the table.

For the Marine Energy University Foundational R&D funding, they're looking to dish out up to 33 awards ranging from $200,000 to $1,000,000. To get in on the action, you've got to toss in a concept paper by 5 p.m. ET on February 20.
