Aramco, a leading global energy and chemicals company, is set to boost its commitment to fostering innovation and disruptive technologies by allocating an additional $4 billion to its venture capital arm, Aramco Ventures. This move will more than double the capital dedicated to Aramco Ventures, escalating the total investment from $3 billion to $7 billion.
With this injection of funds, Aramco's overall venture capital allocation will reach $7.5 billion, inclusive of the existing $500 million venture capital fund, Wa’ed Ventures. Wa’ed Ventures focuses on nurturing startups within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The decision underscores the growing significance of Aramco's venture capital program, aiming to catalyze the development of transformative technologies. This initiative not only creates diversification opportunities for Aramco but also opens avenues for collaborations with innovative startups. The overarching goal is to advance the company's long-term strategy, concentrating on new energies, chemicals, transitional materials, diversified industrial businesses, and digital technologies.
Ahmad Al Khowaiter, Aramco's Executive Vice President of Technology & Innovation, emphasized the pivotal role of innovation in addressing global challenges. He stated, "Through Aramco Ventures, we aim to support pioneers with big ambitions and ultimately help bring their ideas to life. By injecting an additional $4 billion in funding over the next four years, we intend to provide the financial backing required to take game-changing solutions to the next level. This will provide crucial impetus to businesses at various stages of development around the world, while also contributing to Aramco's own long-term objectives."
Before this increased capital allocation, Aramco Ventures managed three funds:
Digital/Industrial Fund: A $500 million fund dedicated to strategic technologies crucial to Aramco's operations.
Prosperity7 Fund: With $1 billion, this fund focuses on investing in disruptive technology ventures beyond the energy sector.
Sustainability Fund: A $1.5 billion fund supporting startups with the potential to aid Aramco in achieving its ambitions for net-zero carbon emissions across its wholly-owned and operated assets by 2050.
This strategic move by Aramco exemplifies its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements, fostering innovation, and contributing to global sustainability goals.
